first off: don't go alone, especially when things are this volatile. talking showing up at night for things that are clearly medium-risk to high-risk to show up for, regardless of what you're doing once there.

really take the time to know who you're showing up with, and what your needs are. i'm dead serious, this can be the difference between being in jail or out of jail, as well as safe vs. injured and/or traumatized.

don't assume that leaders or trusted figures will help or save you. even if they could, and for a bunch of reasons, that's not always a safe assumption, they're very likely to be known by the police, and to get picked up.

learn first aid, including for tear gas and CS gas. carry a kit. bring food and water. don't wear contacts! (you *do not* want to get tear gassed while wearing them)

bring ID, unless you plan to not tell them your name. (which carries a whole bunch of risks, it's worth it to talk with experienced folks about what your needs are, and if possible, legal rights groups).

if you can, figure out what sets you off in advance. this can be hard to predict, but if you know that cops are a trigger, or loud noises are a trigger, and so on -- listen to that. nobody needs you to be a hero. know your limits.

find out if there's legal aid available. get the number, and write it on your arm.

if you get arrested, plan on being in there for at least several hours, if not a day or two, depending.

if things go really bad, or there's overcrowding from the protests, it could be longer.

what else.

if you have long hair, put it up or get it cut, if that works for you. don't wear a scarf, or things that can be grabbed. the idea here is "don't give cops something to grab onto".

remember that if you get on a freeway, you eventually have to get off of the freeway as well ;p

which can mean anything from walking back off to getting arrested because the cops have sealed off the available exits. it should go without saying that freeways are dangerous, but here: freeways are dangerous.

learn how to read the crowd, and figure out when things are going to escalate. this can take practice, but look for cops changing their patterns, as well as fellow protestors doing the same. stay engaged and impassive.

things can go from calm to heightened very quickly, so stay aware of what's happening around you.

social distancing. this is new, obviously.

so, i mean...yes, definitely, but also: the further you are away from people, the easier it is for the cops to grab you. use your best judgement.

please don't show up without a mask and stand right next to someone for extended periods of time, either, if at all possible.
