I had a dream (nightmare) that I had emerged from hypersleep to find myself approaching my destination: . (Voyager 2 took almost 12 years to reach it from Earth).

I was the only person on the ship, and viewing the planet as we approached it gave only feelings of supernatural horror: I had arrived from a perilous journey to an enormous, dead world.

The dream felt like a dose of Eugene Thacker’s cosmic pessimism and a confrontation with the world-without-us, something humans have a hard time reconciling with: there exists, in all its hideous and sublime manifestation, a radically unhuman, impersonal, and indifferent reality.

Our entire solar system is violently inhospitable to us, except for this solitary Pale Blue Dot, our cosmic home suspended in the balance of a goldilocks zone with the Sun. What fortune to have self-awareness on this precious ocean world!

I awoke pondering: are the social organization and economic ideologies on Earth in place to ensure our *actual* survival or to protect human-centered dominance hierarchies? Is endless-growth Capitalism lifting us all out of poverty(?) only to level *everything* in its demise?

As I stood looking out over its overwhelming, unfathomable scale, these impressions of Neptune gave me a sensation that I was headed towards a calamitous collision with the world-without-us, alone, enveloped by the darkness of the vacuum.
