subtoot I guess, 2020

People aren't all "let's just try and get through 2020" because they believe 2021 will be magically better, they're doing it because they are overwhelmed and need to mentally parcel out the time to remain functional. People do this all the time. Sometimes I have to do it day by day. I do consider the longer term, but I can only meaningfully plan what I can do *today*.

You aren't saying anything profound, unknown or kind with your "it's not just about 2020!" hot takes.

And yeah, climate change keeps going, and is the most urgent problem.

But probably the most effective thing *anyone* can do about that right now in the US is work to ensure Trump doesn't get re-elected. Those of us not in the US can help support that too.

That does, in fact, make the rest of 2020 pretty important. There is, in fact, a way to make 2021 be probably better, on balance, and it is a very 2020-focused effort.

Nah. Not voting Biden. He's horrid.

@xenophora Biden is definitely not ideal, but I understand the nature of the system you have there is that you get to choose between him and Trump. You're unlikely to change that system by November.

I guess you are putting your own ideological purity ahead of working for real world practical improvement in that one sphere.

That's your choice, but if everyone who opposes Trump does it, you'll get 4 more years of... Trump.

🙄

It has 0 to do with *~*purity*~*, since I don't believe any1 I've ever voted for is perfect. But Biden is a monster. He's every bit as responsible for the fix we're in as Trump is.

Love it when people who hail from countries which already have multiparty systems recycle tired old cliches which U.S. oligarchs have long used to demand we stay trapped in a duopoly forever. Yeah no. I've been fighting that shit for 20 years & I won't stop now.

@xenophora First Past the Post here means we effectively have something close to a two-party system. And I'm not *from* the UK, anyway, I just live here.

I'm not saying your choice is invalid, just that it has consequences -- which might include Trump getting elected again. You obviously have thought this through and are okay with that. I think you may be mistaken about Biden being just as bad, but I can't decide that for you.

@artsyhonker

Thanks. & sorry for the geographical confusion. I've noticed that in England there's a fight to get rid of 1st Past. Apparently a sizeable portion of rank-and-file Labour voters want it, along wi/smaller parties, but the leadership doesn't. But I haven't really investigated whether that's true elsewhere in the UK...

@artsyhonker

...In a million more years of voting off-road, I couldn't possibly unleash the sort of *consequences* Dems "leadership" does each day: while it rubber-stamps Trump's court pics, lavishes him with military pork, etc. Also, Dems are ugly-minded bullies locking my candidates out of debates & forcing them off ballots, all the while touting their commitment to The Sacred Vote. Fuck 'em. They can't have mine. 🖕

@xenophora The problem is that whatever party is in power got there with FPtP and won't want to scrap it. We almost had a chance with the AV referendum under the Con/Libdem coalition but it was completely botched in terms of on the ground campaigning.

I live in England, study in Scotland. I'm not sure how e.g. Northern Irish feel about FPtP. It's all been swallowed by Brexit concerns at the moment. :-(

Maine in the U.S. will choose a Senator this year via Ranked Choice. We used it to choose a Pres. candidate in Oregon's Green Party primary as well. Not an automatic panacea but it's a step in the right direction, I think.

2020, uspol, climate change, 2021

@xenophora I *do* know a number of people who don't vote because they think there is some kind of moral taint in choosing the lesser of two evils; that's the ideological purity to which I was referring, and your first response was basically indistinguishable from that.

I don't really want to get into policy wonk stuff for a country I don't live in and can't vote in. I will say it suits Trump very well to have lots of people think Biden is just as bad.

2020, uspol, climate change, 2021

@artsyhonker

I didn't need Trump to tell me Biden is horrible. His career should've ended for good in 1988 when he was literally caught plagiarizing speeches from other candidates. One of the worst things Obama ever did, and he did plenty, was helping that gropey old racist asshole revive his career.

I don't recommend looking down like you do at non-voters, even if I'd love to have them turn out. It's a waste of time, and it just makes them angrier.
