mastometa / the scraping incident

While the scraping is alarming and while there's nothing that will ever absolve those people from their actions, I feel like this should be a reminder to all that posting anything to the Internet, publicly, is something you will have to realistically expect may be gathered against your will at some point, no matter how many rules are put in place.

You can obviously try to make it *harder*, but as long as your words can reach the eyes of anyone in public, you cannot somehow magically stop things from reaching the eyes of bad actors only.

Of course, it's impractical to live in fear. But at the same time, anything you post in public needs to be posted with the idea it's likely going to be mined and posted elsewhere -- not with the assumption it won't.

mastometa / the scraping incident

This is hardly unique to fediverse or Mastodon. Remember those scraper bots on Twitter that would actually collect our tweets and publish ebooks out of them?

The more private you want what you say to be, the more locks you have to put it under (and hopefully, the service helping you put the lock isn't a bad actor themself). The only true thing you can do for yourself is be prudent.
